Backyard Nurserymen™ was built on a simple idea:

You don’t need hundreds of acres or a massive commercial operation to build something meaningful.

Mike McGroarty started growing and selling plants from a half-acre backyard nursery directly behind his home. What began as a small backyard operation eventually expanded into a five-acre nursery just down the road — proving that ordinary people really could start small and grow something incredible from the ground up.

Along the way, Mike began teaching others online, launching his first website in 1998 and later building his business into one of the most recognized backyard nursery communities online. For decades, growers from all over the country learned propagation, plant sales, greenhouse growing, and backyard nursery techniques through his videos, blog articles, and community.

His message was always simple:

“By all means, stay inspired.”

And of course:
“Keep making babies.”

In 2023, Mike passed the online business on to his son, Duston, continuing the family legacy into the next generation through Backyard Nurserymen™ — a modern grower community built around education, inspiration, and helping everyday people build something meaningful from their own backyard.

Today, the mission remains the same:
Grow. Sell. Repeat.
